Matthew (Matt) is a personable and engaging family lawyer and mediator. Guided by the principles of attentiveness, responsibility, competence, and responsiveness, he practices in the areas of family law, family violence, and independent representation of children, as well as conducting mediations as an AMDRAS accredited mediator.
He supports individuals through family law with a focus on preserving interpersonal relationships between people in conflict. Communication, trust, and respect are central to his approach.
With an Advanced Diploma of Legal Practice and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours), he graduated with first-class honours and was awarded the Dean’s Scholar Award for the College of Arts, Business, Law, Education and IT. His honours dissertation explored the complex intersection of gender identity and family law, reflecting a deep and considered understanding of contemporary family issues.
His academic excellence was recognised with the highly coveted Supreme Court Prize – one of Victoria’s most prestigious legal honours – awarded to the top graduate of each of the eight Victorian universities. This places Matt among a distinguished peer group of past recipients, including judges, legal academics, and even a Prime Minister.
Beyond his legal practice, he has a strong commitment to social justice. Matt volunteers as a case worker for the Rental and Housing Union, supporting some of Victoria’s most vulnerable renters, and serves on the not-for-profit board of Hampton Park Community House, an organisation dedicated to ensuring no one in the community is left behind.
Away from the law, Matt is a dedicated family man who enjoys spending time with his wife, three children, and extended family across Victoria. A keen gardener, he finds joy in tending the family’s vegetable patch. As a passionate Carlton supporter, his perfect Saturday involves watching the Blues triumph over the Pies at the hollowed turf of the MCG.
His love of reading includes a deep interest in philosophy – especially the works of French thinker Gilles Deleuze. Among his favourite novels are The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and 1984. When time permits, he enjoys revisiting the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
